Focus on the front sightYou do not need to own a rifle to take this course. In fact, this class teaches you how to choose your first rifle! A variety of rifles are available for you to use during the course at no charge. If you already own a rifle, you are welcome to use it during the range session with prior instructor approval. You will need to provide your own ammunition (about 50-100 rounds) for any rifle you wish to use on range day (the second day of class).

Please Note: Absolutely NO live ammunition is allowed in the classroom at any time.

Course Description

The NRA Basic Rifle class teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for the safe use of a rifle in target shooting. This course is divided into two sessions). The first day is classroom based with instruction, demonstrations, participation, and practical hands-on activities. This first day typically runs about 6-8 hours. The second day you will spend on the range applying your newly learned skills. This includes shooting from a variety of positions with your choice of several action types.

Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; rifle parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from multiple positions (bench, standing, kneeling, sitting, prone); cleaning the rifle; and continued opportunities for skill development. Class sizes are 4 persons or less and move at a student-set pace. There is plenty of time for questions and hands-on practice.

Students will receive the Basics of Rifle Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet. Upon successful completion of a Basics of Rifle Shooting Student Examination and successful completion of the course, students also receive course completion certificate.
